Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What triggers a Self Assessment requirement?

You must complete a Self Assessment return if you are self employed with income over £1,000, a company director, have rental income, have income over £100,000, have untaxed income, or have capital gains above the annual exempt amount. HMRC issues notices to file, but the obligation exists regardless of whether you receive one.

What are payments on account?

Payments on account are advance payments towards the following year's tax liability, due in January and July. They are each set at 50% of the prior year's liability where that liability exceeds £1,000. We calculate the expected payments, advise on whether a reduction can be claimed and make sure the dates and amounts are in your calendar.

What if HMRC opens a compliance check on my return?

We manage HMRC compliance checks on behalf of personal tax clients. We respond to the initial contact, gather the evidence HMRC needs and manage the correspondence through to resolution. We keep you informed throughout and make sure the process does not become more disruptive than it needs to be.

How can pension contributions reduce my tax bill?

Pension contributions attract tax relief at your marginal rate 40% or 45% for higher and additional rate taxpayers. They can also reduce adjusted net income below the £100,000 threshold, restoring the Personal Allowance. The Annual Allowance and any unused allowances from prior years affect how much can be contributed. We review the opportunity as part of the planning conversation.
